About this Live Track

DeFi's Concentrated Liquidity from Scratch

In this series of study sessions, we will formally derive amplified (aka "concentrated liquidity") bonding curves from first principles with Dr. Mark Richardson, the Project Lead at Bancor. Bonding Curves have been vital for the success of DeFi since Bancor’s first implementation of an automated market maker (AMM) in 2017. Amplified/Concentrated Liquidity was first described by Bancor in 2020, then popularized by Uniswap v3 in 2021, and later adopted by many other projects across DeFi. Concentrated liquidity curves are the transformed versions of their canonical xy = k counterparts. This transformation allows small token pools to emulate the behaviour of larger pools, with the caveat that the pool is only liquid within a predetermined price range, whereas the xy = k prototype is liquid at all price points.

There are a plethora of white papers and research articles on the subject that do a fine job of elucidating these concepts rigorously. However, the literature has become somewhat piecemeal, and the establishing theory is no longer in vogue. New talent is often left to contend with a patchy, unmaintained, and disorganized record of the evolution of the technology over time. Worse still, the lack of an editorial process combined with the conflation of research and marketing efforts has produced a sometimes confused and often flawed knowledge base.

Throughout these sessions we will perform, from scratch, the constructions of Bancor’s amplified liquidity and Carbon DeFi’s asymmetric liquidity invariants, Uniswap’s concentrated liquidity invariant, as well as three "natural" invariants that help to encapsulate the general theory in a hyperbolic trigonometry context. This course is a perfect springboard for those interested in deepening their understanding of the mechanisms that underpin the DeFi exchange infrastructure, hone their algebra and calculus skills, and earn their erudition in this ever-evolving technological paradigm.
